Breville Bambino Plus review: is automatic milk worth the step up?
Editorial rating
Automatic milk texturing addresses a regular task for latte drinkers while preserving a compact standalone setup. It remains a strong fit for that buyer rather than an all-in-one station: grinding is separate.
Research-based editorial opinion, not a customer rating or hands-on test score.
How we rate products →Kitchen Coach pick for easy lattes
The question is simple: would you enjoy your morning coffee more if steaming the milk took less attention? The Bambino Plus adds automatic milk texturing to a conventional portafilter setup. You still grind and prepare the coffee, but the milk routine is where this upgrade makes its case.

THE VERDICT
Our take
Home latte and cappuccino makers who value automated milk texturing but still want to grind, dose and make espresso with a conventional portafilter.
Your drinks rarely include milk, you already enjoy manual steaming, or the extra machine cost leaves too little room for the grinder and accessories you need.
What works
- Automatic milk-texturing function is a distinct convenience for regular milk drinks.
- Compact home-machine form compared with larger prosumer espresso stations.
- 54 mm filter system and Breville accessories make the overall machine category relatively easy to understand.
- Manual grinding and preparation remain available for users who want to learn espresso technique.
What to consider
- Still requires a suitable separate grinder; the machine alone is not a complete coffee setup.
- Additional milk convenience may not justify the step up for straight-espresso drinkers.
- A small increase in physical depth may matter on narrow counters; check real operational clearance.
- A manufacturer-supported automatic wand is not independent proof of better milk texture in every real-life use.

Specifications that actually matter
Automatic milk texturing changes the morning routine
For regular latte and cappuccino drinkers, automatic milk texturing is the feature to weigh. It takes some of the steaming technique off your hands while leaving coffee preparation to you. If you mostly drink straight espresso, the upgrade may add little to your daily routine.
The total coffee station still determines satisfaction
The Plus is an espresso machine, not a complete station. It has no built-in grinder, and spending the whole budget on the machine can leave you short of essential equipment. List what you already own before comparing prices. A suitable existing grinder makes the decision very different from starting from scratch.
Compact, but not identical to the base Bambino
The Plus takes a little more room than the base Bambino. Check the documented dimensions below, then allow space for water access, a milk jug, portafilter handling and cleaning. The practical question is whether the whole station works comfortably on your counter, including the grinder.
Why the shared brewing hardware isn't the entire story
Both Bambino models use 54 mm portafilters and Breville’s ThermoJet heating system. Those shared features help explain why the buying decision centers on milk preparation. They do not prove identical results, or a taste advantage for the Plus. We have not carried out comparative extraction or temperature tests.
Who should save the money instead?
If you enjoy manual steaming, or rarely add milk, the base Bambino deserves a look. If several people want lattes and cappuccinos most mornings, the Plus has a clearer role. The better purchase is the one whose extra feature you will use, without squeezing the grinder out of your budget.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Questions worth asking
Is Bambino Plus fully automatic espresso?
No. The Plus automates milk texturing, not the entire coffee-making process. Grinder choice, preparation and espresso routine still matter.
What is different from the standard Bambino?
The strongest documented functional difference is automatic versus manual milk texturing; the machines also have slightly different external dimensions.
Can I buy it without a grinder?
You can purchase a standalone machine, but for a workable espresso setup you still need a compatible way to prepare coffee. The complete budget should include that requirement.
Will the Plus make better espresso than the Bambino?
We have no independent side-by-side tasting measurements establishing that. Our comparison focuses on their manufacturer-documented functions and practical suitability.
