10 researched US modelsResearch-led · no hands-on tests
A home baker adding milk to a stand mixer while preparing dough

THE SHORT ANSWER

What would suit your kitchen?

Choose around your usual dough weight and how often you bake. A larger bowl can be useful, but the recipe, mixing system and manufacturer’s kneading limits matter more than size alone.

A Sunday cake and a week of bread ask different things of a mixer. Ten choices cover familiar tilt-heads, larger bowl-lift machines and open-top dough systems. Start with your regular recipe and batch weight, then compare how you will load, knead, remove and clean it.

01 / THE EQUIPMENT, EXPLAINED

Different kitchens. Different choices.

Here is where each model earns its place, and what might make you choose another.

01MODEL OVERVIEW

KitchenAid · KSM150PSER

Artisan 5 Quart Tilt-Head

An everyday mixer for varied home baking

WHY CONSIDER IT

The five-quart tilt-head format gives easy bowl access for cakes, cookies and modest bread batches. Check your dough recipe against KitchenAid’s operating limits.

The trade-off

The head needs room to tilt back. Bowl volume does not tell you how much stiff dough it can safely knead.

KitchenAid · KSM70SKXXBK

7 Quart Bowl-Lift

More bowl room for larger home-baking batches

WHY CONSIDER IT

A seven-quart bowl and locking bowl lift make this worth considering for frequent baking and larger batches that fall within KitchenAid’s recipe guidance.

The trade-off

It takes more space and is less convenient to move. A large bowl is not a commercial-duty rating or permission for unlimited stiff dough.

Bosch / NutriMill · Universal Plus 6.5 qt + NutriMill Dough Hook Extender

Universal Plus 6.5 Quart Dough Mixer + Extender Bundle

A different approach to bread-dough mixing

WHY CONSIDER IT

The Bosch Universal Plus uses a bottom-drive system and a 6.5-quart bowl. This bundle includes a dough-hook extender, making it worth comparing for frequent bread baking.

The trade-off

The top-opening bowl and mixing system handle differently from KitchenAid. Check bundle contents and recipe limits; the maker’s 14-pound dough claim does not apply to every dough.

04MODEL OVERVIEW

Ankarsrum · AKM6230

Assistent Original AKM6230 (Red)

A rotating-bowl alternative for regular bread baking

WHY CONSIDER IT

A rotating 7-liter bowl works with a dough roller or hook, leaving the top open for ingredients. Compare it with Bosch and KitchenAid if bread is the center of your baking week.

The trade-off

The technique differs from a planetary mixer, and accessory packages vary. The linked red Amazon listing is not automatically the same kit as the newer Essential Package.

Wolf Gourmet · WGSM100S

High-Performance 7-Quart Stand Mixer

A seven-quart planetary mixer with a twist-up bowl

WHY CONSIDER IT

The seven-quart Wolf pairs planetary mixing with a bowl that lifts and locks by turning its handle. A variable speed dial and pulse function suit bakers who want direct control.

The trade-off

At a documented 29 pounds, it needs a practical home on the counter. The larger bowl and premium finish do not establish commercial-duty suitability.

NutriMill · NMA6001-BLK

Artiste 6.5-Quart Mixer (Black Trim)

A lighter bottom-drive option for regular bread baking

WHY CONSIDER IT

The Artiste uses a 6.5-quart bowl, bottom-drive mixing and six speeds plus pulse. It offers another route into bread baking without a heavy overhead mixing head.

The trade-off

It has a lower documented dough ceiling and different accessory support from the Bosch Universal Plus. Maker dimensions differ between page sections; measure the current complete unit.

Cuisinart · SM-50NAS

Precision Master 5.5-Quart Stand Mixer (White Linen)

Tilt-head access for a varied baking week

WHY CONSIDER IT

A 5.5-quart tilt-head mixer with twelve speeds and a supplied dough hook, whisk and paddle. Compare it with the KitchenAid Artisan for mixed baking and supported bread recipes.

The trade-off

A slightly larger bowl and 500-watt rating do not prove heavier dough capability. Allow space to raise the head and follow Cuisinart’s recipe-specific speeds and loads.

Hamilton Beach · 63240

Professional All-Metal 5-Quart Stand Mixer

A familiar tilt-head mixer for the whole baking week

WHY CONSIDER IT

A five-quart planetary mixer with twelve speeds, a dough hook, flat beater and whisk. Its attachment hub broadens the possibilities beyond the mixing bowl.

The trade-off

It remains a general home mixer, not a validated heavy-dough production machine. Check recipe limits and the exact attachments supported by its hub.

Ooni · UU-P31300

Halo Pro Spiral Mixer (Charcoal Grey)

Spiral mixing for a kitchen that loves bread and pizza

WHY CONSIDER IT

A rotating bowl, spiral hook and removable breaker bar bring a bread-focused mixing system into a home format. A geared whisk and flexible beater extend it to other baking.

The trade-off

Its large bowl does not remove minimum-batch or recipe limits. At about 32 pounds, it also deserves a planned home on the counter.

GE Profile · P8MSASS6TBB

Smart Mixer with Auto Sense

Weigh ingredients in the mixer and follow supported guided recipes

WHY CONSIDER IT

A seven-quart bowl-lift mixer with built-in weighing and connected recipe features. Consider it for varied baking when reducing transfers between scales and bowls would help.

The trade-off

Auto Sense is tied to supported app recipes, not a promise that every bread dough stops at the right moment. The large body needs a planned home.

03 / BEFORE YOU BUY

Choose for the way you cook.

01

Dough weight beats bowl size

A large bowl does not prove a machine can knead the heaviest dough it can physically contain.

02

Frequency changes the answer

Two weekly loaves and bakery-scale daily batches have different duty, service and cooling requirements.

03

Attachments and footprint

Check accessory compatibility, bowl clearance, head lift or tilt access, usable height and storage weight.

Occasional sandwich loaves and varied baking

Investigate the KitchenAid Artisan KSM150PSER when cookies, cakes, batters and supported smaller bread recipes share equal priority. The tilt-head gives easy bowl access but needs additional clearance to raise the head. Confirm the manual's kneading speed and duration for your recipe.

Frequent, larger supported batches

Compare the KSM70SKXXBK if you consistently prepare larger quantities and have room for a bowl-lift machine. Its seven-quart bowl and 11 speeds are documented, but neither guarantees uninterrupted stiff-dough mixing or professional production.

A mixer with bread at the center

The Bosch Universal Plus takes a different approach, with a 6.5-quart bowl and bottom-drive mixing. NutriMill states up to 14 pounds of dough for supported recipes; check your flour, hydration and batch against the manual. The reviewed bundle includes a dough-hook extender, so compare its contents as well as the mixer.

A rotating bowl for regular bread

Ankarsrum’s AKM6230 works with a dough roller or hook in a rotating seven-liter bowl. That is a different technique from planetary mixing, so allow time to learn it. Compare its red Amazon package carefully: the maker’s newer Essential Package does not establish identical accessories in every listing.

A different bowl lift and speed dial

The Wolf WGSM100S has a seven-quart bowl that raises and locks as you twist its handle, plus variable speed and pulse controls. Compare that handling with the KitchenAid seven-quart. Its documented 29-pound weight makes a convenient permanent counter position part of the purchase.

Another way into bottom-drive bread mixing

The NutriMill Artiste brings a 6.5-quart bowl and a lighter base to the comparison. Its documented dough ceiling and attachment support differ from the Bosch Universal Plus. Compare your recipe and any planned accessories, rather than assuming the same bowl volume buys the same mixing system.

A second tilt-head for a varied baking week

The Cuisinart SM-50NAS offers a 5.5-quart bowl, twelve speeds and a supplied hook, paddle and whisk. Compare it with the Artisan by access, supported recipes and compatible tools. Watts and bowl volume do not establish which mixer handles heavier bread dough better.

A spiral system for regular bread and pizza

Ooni Halo Pro combines a rotating bowl, spiral hook and breaker bar, with a geared whisk and flexible beater for other baking. Compare it with Ankarsrum by mixing method and supported batch range, including your smallest recipe. Choose a technique you want to learn, not simply a larger bowl.

A familiar mixer for a varied baking week

Hamilton Beach 63240 offers a five-quart planetary bowl, twelve speeds and an attachment hub. Compare it with Cuisinart SM-50 for cakes, cookies and supported bread recipes. Check actual dough guidance and accessory compatibility rather than treating a wattage figure as a heavy-bread rating.

Weigh straight into the bowl

GE Profile P8MSASS6TBB adds built-in weighing and supported SmartHQ recipe guidance. Compare it with the KitchenAid seven-quart if fewer weighing transfers would simplify baking. Auto Sense is not a universal dough-readiness feature; GE limits the dough hook to Stir–2.

LIVING WITH YOUR EQUIPMENT

The part after unboxing.

GE Profile Smart Mixer with Auto Sense P8MSASS6TBB product photograph.

Measure cabinet clearance

Check how the head or bowl moves on the model you are considering. The Artisan needs room to tilt, while the bowl-lift, bottom-drive and rotating-bowl alternatives have different loading and removal requirements. Leave space to change tools, lift out a filled bowl and clean around the machine.

Budget for compatible attachments

Compare the exact US model suffix and included hook, whip, beater and shield. Some optional pasta, milling and prep attachments require separate purchases and can have model-specific compatibility.

Know what the bowl rating does not measure

A bowl's quart capacity measures volume, not a validated continuous bread-dough load. Check manufacturer's actual dough guidance for weight, flour type, hydration and mixing time.

05 / YOUR QUESTIONS

A few things worth knowing.

Can I knead bread on a stand mixer's fastest setting?

Do not assume so. Different attachments and dough recipes have manufacturer-specific speed limits; follow the current manual rather than choosing a speed from intuition.

Is a bowl-lift better for a small batch?

Not automatically. Bowl shape and attachment contact can matter more for small quantities than sheer capacity.

Is 7-quart automatically suitable for a bakery?

No. Professional electrical, duty, warranty and service requirements must be confirmed separately.
