Breville Bambino review: compact espresso with a real learning curve
Editorial rating
A clear compact route into hands-on espresso, with grinder choice left open. Manual milk preparation and the extra grinder space keep it from being the easiest complete setup.
Research-based editorial opinion, not a customer rating or hands-on test score.
How we rate products →A small machine for a hands-on coffee ritual. The Bambino pairs a conventional portafilter with manual milk steaming, leaving you to choose the grinder and learn the technique. Its appeal is control without a sprawling machine; its extra cost is everything you need alongside it.

THE VERDICT
Our take
Home espresso learners who want control of shot preparation and a manual milk wand without committing a large amount of counter space.
You want automatic milk texturing, already dislike hands-on espresso routines, or cannot accommodate a grinder alongside the machine.
What works
- Manual milk control suits someone actively learning milk texture and espresso preparation.
- Compact stated dimensions make it easier to investigate for narrow countertops.
- 54 mm portafilter and included single- and dual-wall filter baskets provide a clearer starting equipment set than many entry machines.
- Quick heat-up claim could reduce friction for an occasional home espresso routine.
What to consider
- No integrated grinder: the real cost and space requirement extends beyond this machine.
- Manual milk texturing takes practice and may not suit households seeking automatic drinks.
- Compact body does not remove the need for working room, steam-wand movement and maintenance access.
- Manufacturer's readiness and coffee-quality claims are not substitutes for an independent taste or temperature test.

Specifications that actually matter
The hidden decision: your grinder and total setup budget
Before you choose the Bambino, price the whole coffee station. The machine has a portafilter and baskets, but no grinder. If you already own a suitable espresso grinder, that is straightforward. If you are starting with whole beans and an empty counter, include grinding, a scale and any accessories you need before comparing it with an all-in-one machine.
Manual steaming is a feature — if you actually want it
Manual steaming puts you in charge of the milk jug, wand position and texture. That is part of the pleasure if you want to practice cappuccinos or latte art. It is another task if mornings are rushed. The Bambino Plus offers automatic milk texturing, so choose between the two around the routine you actually want.
A small footprint is not the same as a perfect counter fit
A small machine still needs working room. Leave space to handle the portafilter, move a milk jug, refill water and clean, as well as somewhere for a grinder. Use the manufacturer dimensions below as a starting point, then check the manual for access and placement requirements.
Shot controls and manufacturer specifications — what they establish
The 54 mm portafilter, single- and dual-wall baskets and one- and two-shot buttons describe a conventional home espresso setup. Breville also specifies low-pressure pre-infusion and a 9-bar extraction phase. These features explain how the machine works; they do not establish a taste advantage over its rivals. Beans, grind and preparation still matter.
Ownership and the better alternative
Think beyond the first cup. Cleaning the portafilter, purging the steam wand and maintaining the water system are regular jobs. The Bambino is most appealing when that hands-on ritual sounds enjoyable. If easier milk preparation matters more, look at the Plus; if you also need drip coffee and a grinder, compare the Ninja Mini.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Questions worth asking
Does the Breville Bambino include a built-in grinder?
No. This model is a standalone espresso machine; plan coffee grinding separately. KitchenMatch treats a grinder you already own as an important input.
Is the milk frothing automatic?
No. The Bambino uses a manual steam wand. Breville distinguishes it from the Bambino Plus, which offers automatic milk texturing.
Will it fit under a kitchen cabinet?
Breville states 11.9 × 6.1 × 13.5 inches (W × D × H) for the documented variant, but physical fit also depends on operation, water access and the manufacturer's required clearances.
Does a 3-second warm-up guarantee better espresso?
No. Heat-up is a manufacturer claim about readiness, not independent evidence of taste, long-run temperature stability or extraction quality.
